Cataract is a global issue of visual impairment in many places, especially in middle- and low-income countries. Finding a risk factor may delay the development of cataract for several years and decrease the need for surgical intervention. This large nationwide population-based cohort study revealed SA as a risk factor for cataract. We also found that age greater than 50 years, heart disease, chronic pulmonary disease, and diabetes mellitus were independent risk factors for developing cataract in patients with SA. As patients with SA have higher risk of preoperative complications while receiving ophthalmic surgeries controlling these risk factors is important.
